Civil Litigation

"Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everyone you meet."

-- James Mattis, Gen. USMC (ret.)

Secretary of Defense (ret.)

At Caruço Law, military professionalism, precision, and discipline governs every area of practice.

Robust resolution of non-criminal matters requires:

Investigation

Before issuing a demand letter or filing a complaint, I thoroughly investigate your case so that I have a deep understanding of the issues and paths available to you.

Negotiation

Litigation is long, expensive, and often leaves both sides disappointed. The goal is always to professionally pursue a positive outcome short of litigation.

Litigation

Most civil cases conclude, appropriately, in a settlement. Along the way, though, each side may often allude to or outright threaten to "take this to trial."

Because most cases settle, many civil attorneys have a fair amount of deposition experience, but not many are experienced trial attorneys.

I am.

I litigated my first trial within nine days of reporting for duty at my first duty station in 2012. I pursued a career path that kept me inside the courtroom from every angle.

In my federal clerkship in the military's "supreme court," I learned how to develop a case that can go the distance on appeal if necessary. As a military prosecutor, I litigated cases ranging from simple drug offenses, to complex cases requiring a deep understanding of forensic evidence, to multi-million dollar fraud.

As a defense attorney, I continued that specialized experience, but did it as a two person office, as a junior officer maneuvering against much more senior officers and an opponent with very substantial resources.

My time as an appellate defense attorney enhanced my experience in spotting issues, researching and writing, and handling a high volume of large cases.

And between all that and handling administrative appeals for the Secretary of the Air Force, there was that one death penalty case I was assigned to that the Federal Bureau of Investigation describes as "the largest criminal investigation in the history of the United States."
